1) Get Moving

Whenever possible, try to walk or bike to your destination instead driving and opt for the stairs over the elevator. If you can’t avoid driving, make an effort to carpool with a friend or neighbor at least once a week. Reducing the number of cars on the road not only reduces C02 emissions and smog, but can also help to reduce traffic.

2) Buy Less

Less is more. This saying holds true if you’re serious about reducing your environmental impact. A majority of the products that Americans buy eventually end up in the trash. Buy only what you need and what you know will last for years to come.  Avoid products with excess packaging and disposable products that are thrown away after limited use.

3) Recycle, Recycle, Recycle

Landfills are one of the largest sources of carbon emissions and greenhouse gases produced by humans. Almost 90 percent of what is carelessly thrown away could be recovered through recycling, reuse or composting. Recycling can help to prevent pollution, saves valuable resources, improves public health, and can even save money and create jobs. Although recycling may seem inconvenient to a busy lifestyle, it can have a dramatic impact by preserving the health of the earth and sustaining the environment for future generations.

4) Shop Local

Eating local and seasonally isn’t just beneficial for your waistline, it can also help to save the environment as well. Local and seasonal food reduces the emissions produced from production, transportation and storage of goods. Next time you need to replenish your fridge, forgo a large grocery store chain for your local farmers market to help support local business and reduce your carbon footprint.

5) Reduce Bottled Water Consumption

Although bottled water is a quick and convenient way to hydrate, it is extremely detrimental to the environment and your health. It takes 5 liters of water just to make one bottle and more than a million tons of plastic waste are produced each year. In addition to the harmful environmental impact, bottled water leaches harmful plastic chemicals into the body, disrupts the natural PH balance, and is actually less regulated than tap water. Purchase reusable glass or metal water bottles to not only make a smarter choice for the environment, but for your personal health and wellness as well.
